Has anyone put together a guide for basic troubleshooting when a guest cannot connect? I've seen references to purging click once cache, deleting the 2.0 folder, editing the registry, etc.

It'd be great if there was a top 10 things to try or check when a guest can't connect.

I can't say that I'm aware of a specific document for troubleshooting this but from my experience the vast majority of issues are networking and/or firewall related.

With that said, if you double-click on the client icon in the system tray on the remote machine it should bring up the Client Information Panel. Within this panel there is a 'Last Error Message' field, what's in that field?

I have seen troubleshooting while I did not register. Just follow the user ican.
