This extension will allow you to create a desktop .exe that can be placed on a Guest's desktop. The guest will be able to click the .exe on their desktop and create a connection at any time. Once the extension is installed, the .exe will be available in the Extras menu on the Guest page.

UserPostedImage

We recommend pairing this with a Session Event Trigger to notify you when a guest connects to a support session without a Host (http://help.screenconnect.com/Session_Event_Triggers):

This extension is now available in the Online Extensions Library.

Notes: .NET 4.5 or higher is required to use this extension.

Directly installed.
Looks nice.
Are there any commandline switches so that we can start a session completly without any User input ?

Are you wanting the URL that you can call to create a session or just a way of having the exe automatically create a session and connect when first launched?

Also, if you leave the text box blank, it will populate the session name with some basic information (domain - computername - username I think).

It would be nice that call the EXE like "Screenconnect.exe /Sessionname=xxxx /silent"
So it starts a named xxxx but do not show the screenconnect.exe

At the moment we have a self writen EXE to control GoToAssist.
Our exe asks a sessionnumber. Our customer enters the sessionnumber we gave him.
Our exe starts the GoToAssist Client with a lot of parameters so that the session directly starts.
Our customer don't have to control any other program. Only ours.

So for us it would be nice if our tool could start your .exe like the way above.

Hope you understand me. It's difficult to explain in english ;-)

Also it would be nice to get the URL, perhaps it would be easy for us to write a tool which matches our requirements.

I can't guarantee it, but I'll definitely look into adding that functionality in the next version. I don't think it would be too difficult to implement.

Hi.

That would be nice.

Can you also post the URL to start and join the session ?

It would be something similar to:

Code:
http://SERVER_URI_HERE:WEB_SERVICE_PORT/Bin/Elsinore.ScreenConnect.Client.application?h=SERVER_URI_HERE&p=RELAY_SERVICE_PORT&k=ASYMMETRIC_KEY&s=SESSION_ID&i=SESSION_NAME&e=SESSION_TYPE&y=PARTICIPANT_TYPE&r=

That said, we are in the process of documenting the API, but it may be another few weeks before we release it.

EDIT: well, that's the parameters to pass to the client to join a session. To create the session, I'm using the following method inside of the GetLaunchFileAndSetUrl method:

Code:
var retSessionID = SessionManagerPool.Demux.CreateSession(null, SessionType.Support, sessionName, null, false, null, null).SessionID;

im referring to

<setting name="ShowSystemTrayIcon" serializeAs="String">
<value>false</value>
</setting>

this makes stuff like meetings , and apps like this almost unusable .

i wish this ShowSystemTrayIcon only applied to unattended access ..

and the rest had there own setting .

please consider

Hi Scott.
Can I find somewhere the documentation which values are available for Sessiontype and Participant_type ?
Is it right that the "Asymmetric_KEY" is the key which I found in the web_config ?

Are there any security problems if I use the key ?
With wireshark I can see the URL you open, so I also see the key

Another question, is this article also working with SC5

http://forum.screenconne...ent-remotely.aspx#post25

At the first look it seems to work with commandline switches.

Hi again.
I have played a little bit with your informations so I think it would be easy to start a new Session with our own Delphi Software.

Can you post me a documentation of the

SessionManagerPool.Demux.CreateSession()

function ?
How can I create a Session where the customer had to insert the Session name as accesscode.
I think this is one of the parameters, but which.
Hope you will release the API docu soon, because our trial experies in the next weeks

SessionType is either Support, Meet, or Access. ParticipantType is Guest or Host.

Correct, the Asymmetric key is in the web.config file. No security problem that I know of passing the key, it's already done anyways.

The createSession method in the API looks like:
Code:
public Guid CreateSession(SessionType sessionType, string name, bool isPublic, string code, string[] customPropertyValues)

SessionType is either Support, Meet, or Access.
Name is the name of the session.
isPublic governs whether or not it's listed on the Guest page or Invite Only.
code is the Code used to join the session.
customPropertyValues is the string array containing any values for the corresponding custom properties.

So, to create a Support session named TestName where the join code is TestCode and no custom properties, the application/json payload would look like:
Code:
["Support", "TestName", true, "TestCode", null]

and the payload is delivered to the URL:
Code:
http://SERVER_URI:WEB_SERVER_PORT/Services/PageService.ashx/CreateSession

@teksigns: I'm working on implementing a better way of notifying the client when the session has been created and applying app.config settings natively, so stay tuned.

Thanks for the tip.
Actualy I have my "own" extension which creates a Session with code.
Looks great.
I think when the API is documented it would be possible for me to make all I need with my own delphi EXE

It comes up a error since the new upgrade, but it works if i click ok, the error is only on the client computer, not when o test it on the screenconnect server
UserPostedImage

Btw i'm also getting the error on a Win XP "not a valid win32 application", is it because i can't have the .net framework version 4.5 in win XP?

That image error has been fixed in another build that's currently pending approval. It may take another 2-3 days for that process to go through, unfortunately.

And yes, .NET 4.5 or greater is required. That is something I'm working on eliminating, but no ETA on when it'll be implemented.

Here is an exchange I had with the support team:

I am still evaluating your product against another one called simple-help.
Overall, my preference goes to your software apart from one feature simple-help has: It is the ability during a first support session with a client to drop what they name a "calling card" on the desktop's client. Future support session are then as easy to start as double clicking the calling card; no warning, no clicking on 'YES' or 'RUN', the session is just started and the technician can join it within a few seconds.

Did I miss this feature with screen connect ? How to replicate that ?

We have multiple options to make connections easy for your customers. We just released this guide to help walk you through the available options: http://help.screenconnec...onnect_Usage_Model_Guide .

I would look at item 10. That's going to be the closest to full guest control over connections without having to download the client multiple times.

I personally think that the Guest Session Starter.exe is the easiest solution: http://forum.screenconne...rter--exe.aspx#post17274 . You can place it on your customer's desktop and it insures they have the most up to date client.

Good, this is going in the right direction.
I hope future versions will
- get rid of the need to give authorization to the program to make changes (there was a second dialog box in Windows 8.1 asking for confirmation before launching the program, but creating a shortcut and making sure it launches the exe as an administrator saved me this step; it's still something that needs to be setup the first time on systems with UAC, though.
- work in windows XP (requirement of netframework 4.5 prevent this presently)
- Make it possible to contact the user having started the session by forcing the input of info like a phone number (that could be remembered the next time the session is launched); some users might just think that they just need to launch this for the technician to come to the rescue)
- Make it as easy to install as in simple-help, where it is a one-clic operation from the tools menu (it would be awesome if the guest session starter could be sent, not started frome the toolbox and a shortcut put on the desktop)

Thanks for working on the refinement of this feature.

I had intended to allow the Icon to be configurable in the just released version, but we ended up finding a bug that prevented it. I hope to be able to add it in a future release of the Extension, just no ETA at this moment.

Hi

Few useful features that would be quite helpful to see in this tool

1) ability to embed alternative elevated user credentials - we have a load of users running on machines in a RDP based VDI environment thus we have no way to elevate the session as you can only send Ctrl-Alt-Del to elevate to the console session so can't then see any UAC prompts - which considering that is probably nearly the most frequent support request we have to elevate applications for users is a bit of a pain. However I have discovered that if we run the guest session starter as administrator then it launches as the admin user such that you can see the UAC prompts. All the machines in the environment have the same local admin account setup. Also on that score embedding proxy details would be handy.

2) ability to remove the "enter your name information" type box - I just want something the user had to hit join.

3) ability to automatically shut the starter application once the join button has been pressed or a "thanks that should now launch popup" - at the moment you don't think anything has happened and I am seeing 2 or 3 session being created quite often.

If you can think of another way to do any of these I will be pleased to know

Previously I was looking for a small Screen Connect client EXE that we could distribute and install along with our main application that would allow our main application to launch a screen connect client from our application.

The Guest starter looks like this MAY be possible.

Here's what I want to do, can you confirm this is feasible please:

1. We create (however that is done) a standard Guest starter client EXE that we distribute with our main application. When we install our main application we also install the SC client exe.

2. From our main application (Windows 32 bit app), we have a button the user can click to "Launch support session". When clicked this launches the SC client which connects the user to a new session and triggers a notification to our tech that a support session has been requested.

Basically we just want a technique that allows us to integrate the SC client with our application and NOT have to walk the user through launching the client via a web browser.

Is the guest session starter appropriate for this?
How do we build the appropriate .EXE that we can distribute with our application?

Hi, two issues with the latest version 1.2.1:

The user can create multiple sessions just by doubleclicking on the connect button or clicking 5,6, 7.. X times. Maybe restrict it to one click?

The custom text is not centered.

We are noticing the same problem as indicated in #3 below. It would be great if the starter closed after the join button is clicked. Otherwise, the general inclination is to keep clicking because it seems like nothing happened.

I'm really glad this feature is being implemented, it's one of those "show stopper" features when being compared to other remote support applications. Got this error on a guest running Windows 7 x64 and a host running on Linux x64. I'm guessing it needs the .net framework?
UserPostedImage

It seems like auto-installing the framework if it isn't already there should be pretty easy:
http://wixtoolset.org/do...ecks/install_dotnet.html

Any chance we could get this implemented? Seems like it's going to be a major headache for some folks, we'll use this feature when this gets fixed.

This is a great extension! Three questions:

1. Could you make the exe native so that it doesn't require .net at all? That would be huge!
2. If you can't do #1, could you target an earlier version of the framework? Almost EVERYONE has 2.0, for example. Or at least auto install the required version. I would think it would be more reliable to target something everyone has already though.
3. This isn't availabe as an app for Macs. Any possibility of that?

A Mac version is in the works, but no ETA at the moment. I'm not very familiar with OSX and it's a bit problematic to write for at the moment.

I'm definitely aiming to make it .NET 2.0 compatible. A native version is possible, but that would be quite far down the road.

What are some of the main things people are asking for other than lower .NET requirements and ability to Change Icon.

Possibility to drop a customized (name and icon) and up-to-date version of the launcher on the client's desktop or any other pre-configured location with one click would be awesome.

I would also like to see, that the "starter application" will close after the Join button. I am sure, that our clients have a problem with that.

How can i give access to my tech to join a guest created session?
They only have the option to join sessions generated by them, and this is generated by the user so they don't have access to Join
Maybe add in security the option to allow session starter sessions only
Thanks, On a side note, this is an amazing future for our company!

I see reference to being able to configure the Guest Session Starter yet my system has the Edit function inhibited.

This topic mentions 1.2 something. I have 1.0.103, and my system says it is "(installed and current)"

Can that be correct?

I would like to change the email settings and control the contents of the Custom fields if possible. But without access to the editor, I don't know my options.

Anybody able to edit their Guest Session Starter?

Michael

Are you attempting to edit the source files or just the settings?

Also, the current version is 1.2.1. If you uninstall the extension and then reinstall it, what version does it show up as?

I uninstalled and the reinstall loaded: Version: 1.0.103.

All I think I need is to edit the settings at this point.

(Scott - you were working with my email problem the other day. And we determined that this extension was probably generating the emails)

Ah, sorry, thanks for refreshing my memory. This thread is about the Guest Session Starter EXE extension, you're wanting to edit the Guest Session Starter extension (I know, the names are way too similar).

To edit that extension, you would first have to download the Extension Developer extension and then clone the Guest Session Starter to create a copy that you can edit. The original Guest Session Starter is only editable by the original author.

Once you've cloned the Guest Session Starter extension, just modify/delete the SessionEventTrigger.xml file.

Also, make sure to uninstall the original Guest Session Starter extension.

It would be nice that call the EXE like "Screenconnect.exe /Sessionname=xxxx /silent"
So it starts a named xxxx but do not show the screenconnect.exe

Hi

Has anything like the above been implemented yet? Or is there another way of achieving the same goal?

If you have the Windows Selector installed on the same machine it would pretty much accomplish this. But this extension is simply calling into an API to grab the client file without going to the URL manually. But combining something like the WindowsSelector into this has been discussed by the team.

It would be really useful to be able to add a custom icon to the Guest Session Starter.exe Extension v1.2.1.

I support a lot of domestic uses who are generally less than tech-savy. It would be great to leave a "calling card" on their desktop which would enable them to request/initiate Remote Support.

Some uses struggle with typing a URL into a web-browser, so talking them through the procedure once they get to the Guest page of my SC portal can be difficult - especially when they don't know whether they use Chrome, IE or Firefox! After I've visited with a personal house call or even after a successful Remote Support session, I would like to leave a shortcut/program on their desktop which would keep my company logo front and centre as well as giving them a sure fire way to get Remote Support from me again.

Currently, this extension generally does the job and I could copy the 40K .exe straight to the desktop ready for next time, but I would like to have my own Logo/Branding. We've got the option to change icons elsewhere in SC, and it seems logical to extend this feature to this feature.

If I'm going to leave a footprint - I want it to be mine . . .

Nigel

Thanks for your post. I moved your post into the GSS.exe main post to keep feature requests for the extension in the same place. This is a request we're hoping to build in the next revision of the extension. We don't have an exact date at this time, but it should be released in about a month.

Has there been any new release? We'd love to see where we can pass a parameter in specifying the name of the session that appears by default so users don't have to input one in and we'll know who they are.

Thanks!

@vodka_mann I haven't put anything new out, but I have an ever-growing to-do list for this extension and I'll make sure to add the ability to specify new parameters. Just so I'm clear, are you wanting this to be a global setting (ie all sessions created with the exe call back with the same argument)?

Scott are you able to post the source of the EXE file so we could further customize it and learn to possibly enhance it?
